Emil A. Røyrvik is Professor at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Based in sociocultural anthropology and interdisciplinary research his work focuses on capitalism as a socio-ecological system, managerial society and organizational worlds, and on economic and cultural transformations. He explors in critical and creative ways the generative complexities of the material, symbolic, aesthetic and instrumental orders and rationalities that constitute reality and the emergence of our worlds. He is chair of the Ethnography research group (https://www.ntnu.edu/iss/ethnography) at NTNU, and he has been a visiting scholar at several universities in Europe, Australia, and the USA. Some recent and current projects include “The cultural logic of facts and figures” (CUFF) (https://www.ntnu.edu/sosant/cuff ); “Democracy lab” (https://www.ntnu.edu/delab);  and “Ethnography and social practice art: Multimodal attentions and art-anthropology in transition”. Some of his recent publications include ‘Traveling, translation, transformation: On social responsibility and the Nordic model in China’ (2023); ‘Sacralizing finance, sacrificing society’ (2021) and ‘The stable stranger: Constructing the Roma within the European neoliberal culture complex’ (with Marianne Blom Brodersen, 2022). His monograph The Allure of Capitalism: An Ethnography of Management and the Global Economy in Crisis (published with Berghahn Books, 2011) won SINTEF’s award for excellence in research.
